It's time to face the facts

I really hate winter. You should know that if you have read my blog for any length of time. Every year people get excited for fall and I always wonder why. Why are you exited for the leaves to fall of the trees? Why are you excited for your grass to die? Why are you exited to put your shorts away and pull out your jacket? I don't get it!

But this year I have been trying really hard to change my attitude. Since about September I have been trying to psych myself into thinking that I am really excited about fall and winter. I pulled out my fall decorations and tried to think happy thoughts while I put them out. I have been trying to convince myself that my new whimsical Christmas theme will be a fun change and that winter will be better because of it.

Part 4- Mesa Verde

We took one last long detour on our way home. This time we visited the Mesa Verde Indian Ruins. Before leaving the cabin we were visiting with a neighbor who told us that we would really enjoy it and that it's not too far off the highway. Ha! It was one of the longest drives I have ever taken. I thought we would never make it. My girls started watching The Little Mermaid on the way up and about half way back down it was over. And I'm not one to get car sick but the road winded so much that I started to feel like I was going to have the pukes.

Once we finally got there imagine my disappointment when I saw this:
I seriously felt like "we drove all the way for this!? That little tiny ruin?" I stared for a minute and then turned around and saw this:
It was huge! See the little tiny people down there? I couldn't believe how enormous it was.

Soon enough it was time to head home. It was a great vacation and I am so glad that we took the time to stop along the way and enjoy. Bluewater will always be my favorite part, but each mile will be remembered.

Part 3- Vallecito Lake & Durango

Friday morning we took a quad ride. Pretty much the most stressful part of the whole trip. I feel like I am a pretty decent rider but Jared led us on quite an adventure. Our "quick ride" (his words) turned into a two hour ride that just about killed me. We went up and down, over and around, up steep hills and down muddy ones. I was trying to drive with Kimber and between trying to keep her in place, maneuvering around fallen trees, and trying to stay calm after seeing two sets of bear tracks, I was happy when it was over. Sorry, no pictures. I was too busy trying not to hurt someone.

On Friday we headed to town to pick up a few things to help restock the cabin and decided to enjoy downtown Durango for a little while. We visited a few stores but the hit for the girls was Fuzziwig's Candy Factory. We let them conservatively fill bags with candy like Reese's, Gummy Bears and worms, Hot Tamales...nothing special or out of the ordinary. Jared also put a few things in a bag for himself and I grabbed five cinnamon bears and one Andes Mint. Can you imagine my shock when the cashier told me our total was $15.53 for 1.44 pounds of candy? I could have gone to Wal Mart and bought WAY more of the same brands of candy for a lesser amount. I'm still trying to get over it.

On our way home we took a drive through the small of Vallecito and then to the lake. There wasn't much to see, especially for me since I slept for most of it. We did manage to snap a quick family picture though.

Back at the cabin the girls enjoyed lounging around and doing their puzzles. We also played games and watched movies.
On Saturday we went for a much less adventurous ride before winterizing the cabin, since we are the last ones to visit for the year. We drove up to long meadow and enjoyed the view for a little while. Man, things are much prettier before winter starts to roll around.
